Rosa fresca aulentissima

"Rosa fresca aulentissima ch’apari inver’ la state,

Very fragrant fresh rose

"Rosa fresca aulentissima ch’apari inver’ la state,
le donne ti disiano, pulzell’ e maritate"

"Very fragrant fresh rose ye appearing close to summer,
women desire ye, maids and married"

Reading these rhymes one can almost imagine Francois Coty while smashing on the floor of the Louvre department stores a big bottle of La rose Jaqueminot (1906) and suddenly seeing all the ladies flocking attracted by the bewitching smell of dewy rose. This is what a famous anecdote about Monsieur Coty beginnings tells: power of rhodinol (geranium) and ionones (violet)?

Women desire ye says the poet and let me add also the men. Even though the thing may sound strange, rose offers so many olfactory facets to likely be the most versatile and used smell in modern perfumery. This is probably the thing that mostly thumbed up to the noses during the meeting organized by the friends of Adjiumi's forum at Calé. Silvio Levi welcomed us in his drawing-room to speak with Maurizio Cerizza about rose  and its facets within the raw materials used by a nose. In fact we can find more than four hundred kinds of smelling molecules in the smell of rose. This can help us figuring out how incredibly complex nature can be to reconstruct.

New York style, with a certain je ne sais quoi

The ODIN flagship store
Among the various stands at Pitti Fragranze, in the Spring section dedicated to new brands there was one that claimed attention above all for the essential display: ODIN, concept store based in the east-end of New York, which name is inspired by Odin, god of victory and knowledge of the nordic mythology, launches a line of four fragrances inspired by travels following myths and legends.

The most eye-catching thing at first glance is the lean and practical packaging like the american style chic loves: black boxes, physical, tall and with writings on the spine, almost like limited edition books. Black on black, smooth on rough, glossy on matt: this is the way the story of these novels is written, and the light that pierces through the four bottles let you see the ambery texture of the ink of these novels speaking french and dressing yankee.

I confess that when I hear the word perfume and american together, I'm kind of biased against it: in my mind something conjures up maniacally clean stuff like soap powder, or strongly synthetic and cloying like jelly beans, or even worse something unbalanced passed off as a fresh, modern wonder of perfumery. Fortunately I'm curious like a cat and ravished by the charm of the container I quickly go discovering the content.

September impressions (II)

Having a look around through the stands with my nose open wide at Pitti Fragranze, another theme that seems emerging are spices that, never disappeared, are now back on stage dominating the olfactory palette of various fragrances.
At Nobile 1942 stand, together with some friends of Adjiumi's forum and Bergamotto e Benzoino we had the chance to have  preview smell of Frapin 1697 (formerly Les ailes du desir named after the famous Wim Wenders movie "Wings of desire"), the new frangrance created by Bertrand Duchaufour for Frapin named after the year Pierre Frapin was appointed “Apothicaire du Roi" by the Sun King.

In his composition Duchaufour preserves the liqueur-like footprint that distinguishes the other Frapin scents to create an enveloping and seamless juice. Balance is given by a strong alcoolic opening of rhum absolute and by cinnamon and clove appearing in the heart. The development is silky with notes of jasmine and davana floral-resinous with a hint of grape jam. On my skin this lasts for the main part and the fruity not is yummy, empowered by vanilla emerging through the spices. On female skin it seemed to tone down the spices in favour of vanilla while on the male skin was the opposite. Notes include also rose that I didn't detect though on both paper and skin, maybe because I was blown away by the high quality of raw materials and by the opulent development of the fragrance. I look forward to retry it as the weather cools down to taste it at its full.

sale adagio verso me

sale adagio verso me

"The smell of earth smell of wheat already
rises slowly towards me
and the life in my chest beats quitely"

While coming back from Florence, this song echoes in my head thinking back to my first experience at Pitti Fragranze. This experience has grown up my never died passion for the universe of smells. Bringing back home a load of energy to share thoughts and sensations about things that makes you thrill inside now gives me the strength to restart writing this travel journal of my discovery in the world of perfumes

This edition of Fragranze has been characterized by a stong wish to start new creative paths; you can feel it from many signs. For example Dyptique with its new Eau Duelle explores a composition a little bit more structured than many of its fragrances with a bucolic inspiration. The creation concocted by Fabrice Pellegrin (Firmenich) starts with green sparkling notes of juniper, pink berries and cypress. Then it goes through the contrast between light and shade of vanilla burbon and somalian olibanum. The base keeps up the whole with vetiver from Haiti and papyrus wood. The effect is a dewy green juice that warms up later in a smooth ambery vanilla with smoky facets of incense. On my skin fortunately this is balanced by the bitter greeness of calamus cutting through the middle, almost like an ivy vibe preventing the smell to become cloying and coupling it with the base slightly woody and musky (cypriol?) that diffuses with a smooth, light, aura.
